Makepeace knows that she is supposed to hide her gift. She shares the unique hereditary gift with those of her father's family- the capacity to be possessed by ghosts. As she realized that her family wants her to become merely a vessel for these ghostly ancestors, Makepeace flees across war-torn England where she accumulates her own crew of outcasts and one extremely angry dead bear.
