In 1906, Mercy Wong has everything going against her when she's admitted to an exclusive boarding school for young women: she's poor, she's the daughter of Chinese immigrants, and she isn't really supposed to be there. Despite this, she perseveres until, suddenly, San Francisco is hit with an historic earthquake and Mercy's entire world changes.
